NOTES: Northeast of Charlotte Amalie and northwest of Red Hook, the snorkeling at Sapphire Beach is popular dive site since there is a reef close to the beach. When snorkeling at Sapphire Beach, you can expect to see spotted eagle rays, turtles and other marine life. The marine life includes trumpetfish, squirrelfish, beaugregory, four-eyed butterflyfish, blue tang, trunkfish, grunts and parrotfish. The best snorkeling is to the righthand side of the beach where there are staghorn coral formations. There are a few interesting reefs to explore to the far left as well. Grass beds popular with the rays and turtles dominate the center of the beach area.
To reach the snorkeling at Sapphire Beach from Red Hook, head north on SR38 (Smith Bay Road) for a mile or so. Turn right heading north into the Sapphire Beach Resort and park at the marine docks. Do not leave valuables unattended on this beach.
