Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park Snorkeling In Florida Gulf Coast Map
COUNTRY: USA   PROVINCE: Florida Gulf Coast   (Printer Version)
TITLE: Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park Snorkeling In Florida Gulf Coast
NOTES: North of Naples and south of Fort Myers, the snorkeling at Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park is known for a hard bottom reef offshore of the beach. The best snorkeling in Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park is in Area #2 at the southern end, and the hard bottom reef is located about 200 feet off-shore. This small reef is located about 150 feet south of the swim zone buoy. The water depth over the reef is about 8 feet.

While the visibility is known to be usually pretty low, the best visibility is from October to January. The best time of day is a slack high tide, especially within two hours of noon. Even with the best factors, the visibility rarely reaches 10 feet.

After a long morning of snorkeling, try grabbing a cold drink and meal at the Snook Inn on Marco Island.

To reach the Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park snorkeling from US75, use Exit #111. Head west on CR846 (aka Immokalee Road or 111th Ave N) for 6 miles. Near the ocean, this road becomes Bluebill Avenue and it becomes Park Drive as it enters Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park. There is a small fee to enter the park, and each parking area has showers.

To reach the snorkeling near Naples & Marco Island by air, fly into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) located northeast of Fort Myers and north of Naples / Marco Island. The best bet is to rent a car in order to get to the local dive sites.

There are alternate snorkeling sites nearby. These include Cayo Costa to the north, and the new artificial reefs located about 10 miles offshore (very popular with scuba, but has had some snorkeler tag-a-longs). Snorkeling on the Florida Gulf Coast, such as at Cayo Costa State Park, is not known for good visibility. Matter of fact, the snorkeling is known for very low water clarity in the range from 1 foot to 7 feet most of the year.
