North of Santa Barbara, the snorkeling off Refugio State Beach is known for its abundant marine life along this 1.5 mike sandy shore. During Refugio State Beach snorkeling, it is common to spot opaleye, calico bass and sheephead. There are reefs at either end of the beach where sea hares, sea stars and halibut hang out. The western reef is especially pristine and sports a nice kelp forest.

Refugio State Beach is located about 20 miles north of Santa Barbara on US101.

Overall, Refugio State Beach is the 6th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 11 snorkeling dives in California. Several of the better snorkeling spots are nearby Refugio State Beach including Anacapa Island, Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa Island, San Miguel Island and Santa Barbara Island.
