Northeast of Cruz Bay on St Johns, the snorkeling at Francis Bay is known for its calmer waters due to a protected bay. These 10 foot deep waters are good for families. The best snorkeling at Francis Bay is at the southern end of the beach in the shallower water.
If you are an experienced snorkeler, try snorkeling to the north along the southern shore of the Mary Point peninsula.
To reach the Francis Bay snorkeling from Cruz Bay, head east along North Shore Road (Route 20) past Maho Bay. Just as North Shore Road heads inland continuing east, veer left heading north and stay left at the next interection to reach Francis Bay. There are about 20 parking spots that fill up quickly. It get very crowded on the beach.
To reach the snorkeling on St John by air, you will need to first fly into the island of St Thomas using Cyril E. King Airport (STT). Then, you will need to take a taxi to one of the two docks with ferries heading over to St John.
Note: When snorkeling off St Johns USVI, be aware of potentially dangerous marine life including lionfish and sea urchins. Also, the coral reefs are in distress so be careful not to walk on or touch the coral.
