Southwest of Grand Turk, the snorkeling at Salt Cay is known for its coral reefs. The best Salt Cay snorkeling is off the northern tip at Point Pleasant. Matter of fact, some consider this northern tip snorkeling on Salt Cay to be the best in Turks and Caicos. There is good visibility of up to 100 feet with plenty of brain coral, pillar coral, huge elkhorn coral and staghorn coral in 15 foot deep water. Keep an eye out for conch, parrotfish, turtles, nurse sharks, tarpon, angelfish, grouper, and spotted eagle rays. The snorkeling off Salt Cay can either be accessed by boat or by shore. There are also snorkeling tours to view humpback whales.
Salt Cay is located about 7 miles southeast of Grand Turk Island and is a 5 minute inter-island charter flight. There are two other snorkeling dive sites a few miles off of Salt Cay including Coton Cay (4 miles northeast) and Big Sand Cay (6 miles south). After a long morning of snorkeling off Salt Cay, you might want to check out the Coral Reef Bar for a cool drink.
Grand Turk is located 70 miles southeast of Providenciales and there is no public ferry service. To reach the snorkeling on Turks and Caicos by air, fly into Providenciales International Airport (PLS) located in the middle of the island. To reach Grand Turk from Providenciales, you will need to fly on a domestic airline into Grand Turk McCartney airport (GDT) which takes about 30 minutes. The two inter-island airlines serving Grand Turk are interCaribbean and Caicos Express Airways. TIP - Grand Turk island is very popular with cruise ships that deposit several hundred thousand visitors a year, so plan your days on Grand Turk to avoid these invasions.
Overall, Salt Cay is the 7th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 32 snorkeling dives in Turks And Caicos. Several of the better snorkeling spots are nearby Salt Cay including Gibbs Cay, The Wall, The Library, Old Pier / South Dock, Pillary Beach and Governors Beach.
