Northwest of Jepara in the Java Sea, there is amazing snorkeling dive sites in the Karimunjawa Islands. The Karimunjawa archipelago consists of 27 islands that form the Marine National Park Karimun Jawa. Of the 27 islands, there are five that are known for their dive sites. The best beach accessed snorkeling can be found off Tanjung Gelam Island, Menjangan Kecil Island and Cemara Kecil Island, while the best boat accessed dive sites are off Gosong Cemara Island and Burung Island. These islands are known for their protective reefs which have 35 types of hard and soft corals, along with sponges and gorgonian. The marine life around the Karimunjawa Islands includes sharks, stingrays, starfish, snapper and jellyfish.
The Karimunjawa Islands are located south of Borneo about 90km northeast of Jepara in Central Java. To reach the snorekling in the Karimunjawa Islands from Bali or Jakarta, fly to Semarang, Java. Then, book a charter flight from Semarang to Karimunjawa. There are boat transfers from Karimunjawa to the various island hotels.
Tip - While snorkeling off Karimunjawa Islands, make sure to use a diver down flag since the boaters tend to drive fast and be unaware of snorkelers in the water.
