Off Caravan on the northwest shore of Saipan, the snorkeling at the Managaha beach reef is considered one of the best dive sites in Micronesia. Managaha is a sandy islet located in western Saipans lagoon and the beach is highlighted by crystal clear water. But, with that said, there is really not much to see even with that high visibility here. Except, you can expect to see thousands of other tourists daily on this small island. You really want to snorkel further offshore on the reef, which may require a charter dive boat. During a Managua snorkeling dive, you may encounter hawksbill sea turtles, green sea turtles and schools of eagle rays in the 10 to 30 foot deep waters of the coral gardens. The water is usually warm and quite clear.
The local waters are protected by the Mañagaha Marine Conservation Area. There are 240 species of hard corals and 30 species of soft corals, which provides habitat for over 100 species of fish.
Managaha Island is located northwest off the coast from American Memorial Park. Located within the Managaha Marine Conservation Area, this area is accessible by boat from the mainland. There is an admission fee required to land on the island, in addition to the boat fee. There are several tour companies that provide ferry service to the snorkeling at Managaha Island. While this can be a good shore-accessed snorkeling dive, there are companies providing boat-access to the snorkeling.
To reach the Saipan snorkeling by air, fly into Saipan International Airport (SPN) located on the southern end of the island. It is a five hour flight from Hong Kong or a 40 minute flight from Guam.
While January to April is considered to offer the best tourist weather, the best time of year for snorkeling on Saipan is from June to August. Saipan is located outside of the typical typhoon belt, so the reefs are nearly pristine and undamaged.
Overall, Managaha Beach is the 4th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 5 snorkeling dives in Northern Mariana Islands.
