Southwest of Nassau in the Bahamas, the China Point off Andros Island is very popular. While snorkeling China Point, you may encounter triggerfish, sergeant majors, squirrelfish, angelfish, grouper and blue tangs.
The China Point snorkeling dive site is located off the east coast of North Andros Island near Fresh Creek. There are good coral formations of elkhorn coral, brain coral and star coral. This is a good beginner snorkeling dive site. It is located 9.5 miles northwest of Andros Town on North Andros Island.
The snorkeling off Andros Island is known for its deep blue holes. The blue holes off the coast are in about 20 feet of water and the rim around each is covered with coral gardens. These coral gardens attract reef sharks, stingrays, jacks and barracudas. A good base for snorkeling on Andros Island is Small Hope Bay Lodge located north of Andros Town on the east coast.
To reach the snorkeling at Andros Island, most travelers will fly commercial airlines into Nassau on New Providence or fly into Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. To reach the out islands from Nassau, you can either use Bahamas Air (which is known for late departures) or use the mail boat ferry service (393-1064).
Tip: Keep in mind while snorkeling China Point off Andros Island, the water temperture is known to vary greatly from summer (78F-84F) to winter (68F-76F).
Overall, China Point is the 2nd most popular snorkel dive spot of all 11 snorkeling dives in Andros Island.
