Southeast of Havana and northeast of Holguin in eastern Cuba, the snorkeling at Playa Esmeralda is a popular with local divers and tourists alike. It is a good family-friendly snorkel spot. This region of Cuban coastline includes Playa Pesquero in the west, Playa Esmeralda in the middle and Playa Guardalavaca in the east. Many consider the sites along this section of coastline to be the best on Cuba. As these snorkeling dive sites are more exposed than some others on Cuba, for the best diving conditions and visibility, it is important to get an early start before the winds kick up the surf.
The best snorkeling in Playa Esmeralda is right off the Paradisus Resort, where the iron shore offers excellent water clarity. The extensive reef formation extending 300 feet offshore supports a diverse reef fish population. During Playa Esmeralda snorkeling, you may encounter parrotfish, butterflyfish, sergeant majors, moray eels, lion fish and squid.
To reach the snorkeling on Cuba, fly into Havana Jose Marti International Airport located on the northwest side of the island. There are inter-island flights to the nearby Holguin Frank Pais International Airport (HOG).
Overall, Playa Esmeralda is the 9th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 18 snorkeling dives in Cuba.
