Southeast of Havana and northeast of Holguin in eastern Cuba, the snorkeling at Playa Guardalavaca is a popular with local divers and tourists alike. This region of Cuban coastline includes Playa Pesquero in the west, Playa Esmeralda in the middle and Playa Guardalavaca in the east. Many consider the sites along this section of coastline to be the best on Cuba. As these snorkeling dive sites are more exposed than some others on Cuba, for the best diving conditions and visibility, it is important to get an early start before the winds kick up the surf.
The best snorkeling in Playa Guardalavaca is right off Club Amigo Resort where the reefs extend several hundred feet offshore and continues to get better the further you snorkel. The water depth is pretty much less than 10 feet deep. During Playa Guardalavaca snorkeling, you may encounter queen angelfish, sergeant majors, trunkfish, flying gurnard, reef sharks, moray eels, lion fish and squid.
To reach the snorkeling on Cuba, fly into Havana Jose Marti International Airport located on the northwest side of the island. There are inter-island flights to the nearby Holguin Frank Pais International Airport (HOG).
Overall, Playa Guardalavaca is the 12th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 16 snorkeling dives in Cuba.
