On the northshore of Cayman Brac in Stake Bay, the snorkelling at Jan's Reef is popular for its elkhorn coral and marine life. There is a beautiful spur and groove reef formation off the ironshore in waters from 10 to 50 feet deep. During a Jan's Reef snorkeling dive, you may encounter parrotfish, wrasse, yellowtails, sergeant majors, angelfish and hawksbill turtles. The marine habitat consists of a variety of coral types including fire coral, star coral, brain coral and elkhorn coral. This dive site is known for usually calm water since it is on the north side of the island, unless the wind happens to be coming from the north.
After a long day of snorkeling at Jan's Reef, you might want to grab a cool, refreshing drink at the Tipsy Turtle Pub on Cayman Brac.
To reach the snorkeling on Cayman Brac Island by air, you will fly into the Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) on Grand Cayman Island. Then, transfer to the inter-island airline, Cayman Airways, to head to Charles Kirkconnell International Airport (CKIA) on Cayman Brac Island. When departing the Cayman Islands, there is a departure tax of $37.50USD. This tax may be included in the airline ticket, but you will want to verify in advance.
The Jan's Reef snorkeling dive site is located on the western end of Cayman Brac on the protected northshore. The dive site is located to the east of West End in Stake Bay and to the west of Stake Bay Point. The best Cayman Brac snorkeling can be found year-round with typically high-clarity water. There is plentiful marine life with over 500 fish species including sergeant majors, parrotfish, barracuda, horse-eye jacks, moray eels, stingrays, turtles and occasional reef sharks. On Cayman Brac, there are two good dive shops, Dive Tiara Dive Shop and Reef Divers Cayman Brac, that can provide additional leads on snorkeling dive sites, boat tours and snorkel mask sets.
Overall, Jan's Reef is the 10th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 18 snorkeling dives in Cayman Brac.
