Northeast off the coast of Cairns, the snorkelling off Green Island is well known for encounters with stingrays, turtles and occasional migrating humpback whales. The water depth varies from 3 to 30 feet deep.
On this coral cay, the best Green Island snorkeling is off the eastern side of the island where there are healthy coral gardens. Keep an eye out for giant clams and sponges. The fringing coral reef is directly accessible from shore. Watch for the migrating humpback whales from June to October.
Green Island is located about 29km north east of Cairns. There is a fast catamaran service (45 minutes) direct from Cairns.
Overall, Green Island is the 18th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 43 snorkeling dives in Queensland. Several of the better snorkeling spots are nearby Green Island including Norman Reef, Heron Island, Hamilton Island, Lady Elliot Island, Agincourt Reef and Langford Reef.
