Northeast of Exmouth off the coast of Onslow, the snorkeling off Thevenard Island is well known for its black coral formations. Thevenard is part of the Mackerel Islands, which consists of 10 distinct islands. The best Mackerel Islands dive site is called Black Flag, which has black coral formations and occasional resting nurse sharks.

Overall, Thevenard Island is the 22nd most popular snorkel dive spot of all 24 snorkeling dives in Western Australia. Several of the better snorkeling spots are nearby Thevenard Island including Turquoise Bay, Lakeside, Oyster Stacks and Montebello Island Marine Park.
