Northwest of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, the snorkeling at Hikkaduwa is one of the better known snorkeling spots. While the coral may appear dead after bleaching, there are still plenty of small reef fish to observe along with sea turtles. A good place to start is right off the Coral Sands Hotel where you'll find a reef within 15 feet of shore and then another reef about 90 feet offshore. Just keep an eye out for all the boat traffic and use a diver down flag. To avoid monsoon season, the best time of year for Hikkaduwa snorkeling is November to April.
To reach the snorkeling in Sri Lanka by air, fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which is also known as Colombo International Airport or Katunayake International Airport. It is located in the middle of the western coast.
Overall, Hikkaduwa is the 3rd most popular snorkel dive spot of all 8 snorkeling dives in Sri Lanka.
