North of Negombon on the west coast of Sri Lanka, the snorkeling at Kalpitiya is best known for the offshore Bar Reef which has very high visibility. The Bar Reef is the largest reef off Sri Lanka at 3 miles long by 1 mile wide with many parts being very shallow. It is about a one hour small boat ride out to the reef from Turtle Point Lodge. While snorkeling Bar Reef, you may encounter reef sharks, sea turtles and a vast variety of reef fish. To avoid monsoon season, the best time of year for Kalpitiya snorkeling is December to April.
To reach the snorkeling in Sri Lanka by air, fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which is also known as Colombo International Airport or Katunayake International Airport. It is located in the middle of the western coast.
