Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Snorkeling

The 10th most popular snorkel dive spot in New Zealand.

Southeast of Auckland and Rotorua, the snorkeling in Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve is good for beginners. While there is low visibility, you may encounter anemones, blue moki, octopus, eagle rays and triplefins. The best time for snorkeling at Te Tapuwae o Rongokako is 1-2 hours before low tide. Use caution during tide transitions due to stronger currents.

To reach Auckland by air, fly into Auckland Airport (AKL), which is located south of Auckland. The marine reserve is located about 15km northeast of Gisborne on Highway 35 (Pacific Coast Highway). Within Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve, the public access is at Pouawa.

Overall, Te Tapuwae o Rongokako is the 10th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 10 snorkeling dives in New Zealand.
