East of Madagascar on Réunion Island, the snorkeling at Ermitage Lagoon offers diverse marine life. It is located on the west coast north of La Saline-Les-Bains and is considered the best lagoon on Reunion Island. Ermitage Lagoon is protected by a barrier reef about 350m offshore and teh water depth is only about 2m all the way out. Some of the best lagoon snorkeling is located in the waters south of Grand Hotel du Lagon and the quality gets better the further you snorkel out. During Lagon de l’Ermitage snorkeling, you may encounter moray eels, French angelfish, parrotfish, moorish idols, butterflyfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, sea turtles and stingrays.
Reunion Island is located 700km east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean within the Mascarene archipelago. The island is 45km wide and 39km long. There are two seasons on Reunion Island that include the hot, wet season from November to April and also the cool, dry season from May to October. In the latter season, the water temperature drops several degrees, so the bridge season from March to May is best for snorkeling. Overall, the island waters support 500 fish species and roughly 150 coral species. As a recently formed volcanic island, there are not many protective coral reefs. The barrier reefs are limited to 25km of coastline along the southwest side of the island. During Reunion Island snorkeling, you may encounter butterflyfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, moray eels, French angelfish, sea turtles and stingrays.
To reach Reunion Island by air, use the Roland Garros Airport (RUN) on the northcoast to the east of Saint Dennis. The flight service by Air Austral provides flights to France, South Africa, Mauritus, the Seychelles, and Madagascar. While Reunion Island is part of France and uses the Euro, it is also very popular with South African tourists since its only a 4 hour flight from Johannesburg.
Overall, Ermitage Lagoon is the 2nd most popular snorkel dive spot of all 6 snorkeling dives in Reunion Island.
