On the western point of St Martin, the snorkeling at Maho Bay is best known for reef formations off an ironshore. The best Maho Bay snorkeling is right off the deck of the Sunset Beach Bar. Among the old decaying coral formations, there is plenty of new staghorn coral and brain coral growth. You may encounter porcupine pufferfish, needlefish, angelfish and sergeant majors. This snorkel spot is ideal if its a sunny day with calm winds and low surf. The water clarity typically ranges from 10 to 20 feet of visibility at most. There is usually plenty of surges and surf at this location so use care.
To reach the snorkeling on Saint-Martin by air, fly into Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). Note, there is a $30USD departure tax collected at the airport. This spot is about a 0.75 mile drive west of the airport entrance.
There is paid parking lot next to the Sunset Beach Bar. If you buy something, they will validate your parking ticket so its free. The hurricane in 2017 did quite a lot of damage to nearby buildings and hotels, so it may look kind of sketchy in this neighborhood.
Overall, Maho Bay is the 6th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 15 snorkeling dives in St Martin - Sint Maarten. Several of the better snorkeling spots are nearby Maho Bay including Creole Rock, Tintamarre Island, Happy Bay, Baie Rouge, Anse Marcel and Baie Orientale.
