North of Grand Case on the northcoast of St Martin, the snorkeling at Anse Marcel offers calm waters in a very protected bay. There is an interesting rock formation in the bay called Rocher de L'Anse Marcel which is a good destination for very advanced snorkelers. This snorkel spot is ideal if its a sunny day with calm winds and low surf. The water clarity typically ranges from 10 to 12 feet of visibility at most. The Anse Marcel snorkeling is known for its occasional sea turtle and stingray sightings.
To reach the snorkeling on Saint-Martin by air, fly into Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). Note, there is a $30USD departure tax collected at the airport. The main access road comes from the east coast (not Grand Case) from the north of Orient Bay.
SPECIAL NOTICE: In September 2017, the island of St Martin/Sint Maarten took a direct hit from the destructive Hurricane Irma, and the Anse Marcel area was particularly hard hit with plenty of destruction. The island infrastructure was severely damaged and will take significant time to rebuild. As of Spring 2019, there really isn't much reopened in Anse Marcel. While there have been no reports on the exact impact on the coral formations, the high surf associated with hurricanes of this magnitude typically result in coral smoothering due to sand and the breaking of large coral structures. Therefore, the quality of the snorkeling should be adversely impacted for many years to come.
Overall, Anse Marcel is the 8th most popular snorkel dive spot of all 15 snorkeling dives in St Martin - Sint Maarten. Several of the better snorkeling spots are nearby Anse Marcel including Creole Rock, Tintamarre Island, Happy Bay, Baie Rouge, Baie Orientale and Pinel Island.
