North of Wellington, the snorkeling in Kapati Island is known for its eagle rays, octopus, wrasse, red moki, starfish and sea cucumbers. Kapati Island is located within the protected Kapati Marine Reserve. The best Kapati Island snorkeling can be found off Rangatira Point on the west coast. To reach the snorkeling near Wellington on the north island of New Zealand, fly into the Wellington International Airport (WLG), which is located to the southeast of the city center. There is occasional day tours out to Kapati Island via the Kapati Island Ferry.
